Why Florida is the Vacation Capital of the World May 17

If you and your family are contemplating a Summer Beach Vacation, Florida’s got it all.  Whether you want to check out the world’s most chic city, bask in the Florida sunshine on world renown beaches, adventure on turf or sea, or just kick back and do nothing, the Sunshine State is the place for your vacation. Get the most out of your Florida vacation with these tips.

A key item to keep in mind that the State of Florida is a big state with a wide range of attractions in many areas so it pays to determine your itinerary in advance. Florida’s proximity to two bodies of water,
sitting between the Atlantic on the East and the Gulf on the West. One thing for sure, with 1200 miles of coastline, not matter your destination in Florida, you are never far from the beach.

Here’s a peak at the various major regions of Florida, all sure to please.

The Northern region of Florida allows for a glimpse into the state’s historical past from colonial forts in St. Augustine on the stretch on the Atlantic Ocean, better known as the First Coast. Further down the coast lies  Cape Canaveral and the Beaches surrounding it that provide some of the best surfing in the state.

To the west, on the Gulf side, directly across I-10 from Jacksonville, is the region known as the Panhandle of Florida. This long stretch of beaches is home to several areas that offer great vacation options as well including some of Florida’s top rated beaches on the Gulf. The Emerald Coast to the west on the Panhandle includes top beaches like Pensacola, Sandestin, Fort Walton Beach and Panama City Beach. The Forgotten Coast includes less developed in a series of quieter fishing regions with gorgeous beaches as well and includes Port St Joe, Alligator Point, and Shell Point easily accessible after a flight into Tallahassee.

The Orlando Region is where you will find many of Florida’s major tourist destinations including Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Sea World and Universal Studios Orlando.Visitors to the region can also take a walk on the wild side by visiting Gatorland, which is home to hundreds of Florida’s favorite reptile. Water parks are also a refreshing place among the hot attractions and there are plenty to choose from, including Blizzard Beach and more.

South Florida includes the jet set locations like Miami, Palm Beach, and Fort Lauderdale in the area known as the Florida Gold Coast. Taste modern city life, with a Spanish Flair – the ultimate in Cuban cuisine, high end shopping and Art Deco. Of course, there are several great beaches as well.

The far south is also home to the America’s Caribbean hideaway of The Florida Keys. Visitors here get a taste of island time without stepping outside the USA. This chain of delightful islands include: Key Largo, Marathon and the ever popular Key West. Where else can you go fishing, scuba diving and windsurfing and enjoy a sunset cruise while sampling some fresh caught lobster.

The South West regions includes Manasota Key and Little Gasparilla Island and many more warm water beach areas. This region boasts a lot of high quality cultural events as well as some exceptional fishing.

The Central Gulf Coast is centered around the Tampa Bay beaches and includes Indian Rocks Beach, Clearwater Beach and Crystal River and offers a variety of arts as well as great fishing.

The regions you choose to enjoy may depend on your fellow travelers. With kids, they’ll want to be taken to Disney World; if you’re a couple or on Honeymoon; the Panhandle beaches will offer you the perfect romantic setting; if you’re a group is more active and hip, you’ll want to check out Miami for its fast city life and great beaches and shopping.

Don’t Miss the Blue Angels at the Florida Keys Airshow 4/10 & 4/11 Mar 31

The U.S. Navy’s renowned Blue Angels Flight Demonstration Squadron is to showcase its members’ dynamic flying skills Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11, during the Southernmost Air Spectacular presented by Naval Air Station Key West.

Admission is free to the air show, scheduled to take place at NAS Key West’s Boca Chica Field, located at mile marker 8 on U.S. Highway 1 just north of Key West. Gates are to open at 9 a.m. both days, with action scheduled to continue until 5 p.m.

The legendary Blue Angels are internationally recognized for their superb formation flying. The squadron, whose winter home was NAS Key West in the 1960s, is to perform maneuvers in F/A-18 Hornet fighter aircraft beginning at 2:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Other planned air show highlights include an F-18/EF Superhornet demonstration by the Strike Fighter Squadron VFA-106 “Gladiators,” an F-5N Tiger Diamond flyby by the Fighter Composite Squadron VFC-111 “Sundowners” and performances by the 101st Airborne “Screaming Eagles” Parachute Demonstration Team and U.S. Air Force Viper West F-16 Demonstration Team.

The show also is to feature daring civilian aerobatic exhibitions including an aerial “pirate” act, displays of military and vintage aircraft, a kids’ zone and concessions.

The Blue Angels’ history dates back to the end of World War II, when Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Chester W. Nimitz ordered the formation of a flight demonstration team to showcase naval aviation. The Blue Angels performed their first flight demonstration in June 1946, and an estimated 15 million spectators view their shows each year.

Florida Panhandle-The finest fishing Jan 20

Back in 1845, Captain Leonard Destin settled in northwest Florida and pioneered the fishing industry here. Since Capt. Destin’s first catches, the Emerald Coast has been known as a fisherman’s paradise. Whether you fish off the shore of Okaloosa, Walton or Bay Counties, in Choctawhatchee Bay or St. Andrews Bay, or in the rivers, bayous and lakes in the area, anglers can be certain of a fishing fantasy come true.

Florida Vacation Fishing

Florida Vacation Fishing

Let’s start with the Fort Walton and Destin areas. Destin has long been known as the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village”, and with good reason. With the largest fleet of charter fishing vessels, over 200 boats, and an offshore shelf that dips straight from Destin’s East Pass to 100-foot depths within ten miles, Destin is recognized as the quickest deep-water access on the Gulf of Mexico. Over twenty species of edible game fish are always in seasonal runs, and more billfish are caught here than at all other Gulf ports combined. Over 35,000 fishermen and women rain down on the area in October each year to test their luck in the Destin Fishing Rodeo. And you don’t have to be an “old salt” to participate. Just hop on a registered charter boat or drop your hook into the beach waters or off an area dock or pier. You catch the biggest – you win! The Rodeo gives out daily, weekly and overall prizes in men’s, women’s and junior angler’s categories for every game fish you can reel in. And don’t forget the Cobia World Championship Fishing Tournament in the spring.

Yes, fishermen and women are lured by the Emerald Coast’s deep sea bottom fishing for our year-round concentrations of amberjack, triggerfish, grouper, and red snapper, just to name a few. And farther off shore, trollers bring in big game such as blue marlin, wahoo and sailfish. Even landlubbers can reel in the big ones off the 1,200 foot Okaloosa Pier that is known to shelter 100-pound tarpon. Now that’s a catch!

Great Fishing Abounds

Great Fishing Abounds

The Choctawhatchee Bay and the surrounding bayous are favorite sites to pull in Spanish mackerel, white trout, red drum and specks. And the Choctawhatchee River flows 96 miles from the Alabama state line to the Choctawhatchee Bay. It offers large amounts of bass, bream and catfish. The Hurricane Lake Reservoir in Blackwater State Forest has some large bass in the spring and early summer. Stocked with catfish, this lake should be on a fisherman’s list of places not to miss.

Moving east along Highway 98, Panama City and Panama City Beach offer the angler even more fishing delights. The 5,000 acre Deerpoint Lake, which is fed by natural freshwater streams, supplies more that 750 million gallons of water each day to the Panama City area, making it well-known for springtime shellcracker fishing. Also look for your hook to drop hard with largemouth bass, catfish and bream. In St. Andrews Bay test your angling expertise by fly-casting for red fish.

Panama City Beach hosts a huge fleet of fishing charters, from 16-foot skiffs to fish the shallowest flats to million dollar sport fishing yachts to bring in the big haul. Many varieties of fish are available year-round, but spring and fall offer the best angling. The area offers a variety of tournaments to test your skills, the most famous being the Bay Point Billfish Tournament, which reeled in a record-breaking 1,046 pound blue marlin in 2001. That catch set a new Florida state record and weighed in as the 14th largest in the world. Now that was one BIG fish!

If you are between the ages of 16 and 64, you’ll be required to have a fishing license before you set out for your big catch. Licenses are relatively inexpensive and may be purchased through the county tax collector’s offices and at many bait and tackle shops.

Save Big on Your Next Florida Vacation Jan 03

Its time to plan your next Florida Beach Vacation now before all the best beach rentals are all booked.

Smart travelers are already aware that booking a beach front rental will save them hundreds of dollars versus staying in a hotel, we have also found a great place to save on your other high cost item – Food. Part of a fantastic vacation is taking the whole family out to great dinners at fabulous local eating establishments.

Well just like your accommodations, there is no need to pay full price for food!

If you are staying anywhere on the Gulf Coast of Florida or in the Disney/Orlando Area you should definitely make a stop at Restaurant.com for discounts on meals for the whole family.

How can a company offer $25 gift certificates to restaurants and only charge you $10 (or less if a coupon is involved) and actually be a deal that is for real?

We purchased our gift certificate for $25 for a mere $4 because they happened to be running a great sale on the gift certificates. When we typed in our zip code, there are a over 70 restaurants in our area along the Tampa Beaches.

I purchased the gift certificate for one particular restaurant and a copy of the gift certificate was emailed to me as well as available immediately for printing. You have the ability at this time to make a reservation through the website. This is not required, but I thought it might make the process go smoother and alert the restaurant that I was using one of these certificates Within a minute of placing the reservation I received an automated call from Restaurant.com to thank me for placing my reservation and that they were confirming it.

We went to dinner that night and had two entrees and two glasses of wine. The total bill was over the amount needed for us to use the certificate so meeting a $35 minimum purchase at the restaurant was not a problem at all! When we received the bill, we tucked the certificate inside and when the waiter came out with our bill revised with the $25 removed from the total tab. Now we could let the excitement really begin because it was the real deal! Our evening, including our tip and the $4 purchase price) was about the cost of one entrée at the restaurant – you reaLLY CAN’T BEAT THIS DEAL.

Now why in the world would a restaurant be open to doing this? Well, if it is a small mom and pop shop, this is a great way to get new faces in the door and let them know about your restaurant. For example, the place we went to was so great that I now want to go there for my birthday. Mission accomplished by the restaurant to get me to be a reoccurring customer. This is also a great way for a new restaurant to get their name out there. The places that were offered were great and they probably know that they are great. They know that they are so great that they can give you food (practically free) and know that you will probably come back and pay top dollar for the same entrée.
